When I was younger I had the opportunity to work at a camp in northern Ontario for a number of summers. One year the recreation leader had a mantra that has stuck with me over the past 20 years. “If you act enthusiastic, then you'll be enthusiastic!” Now, to be honest, at the time I found her exceptionally bubbly personality a bit annoying, but her words, well, that is a different story. Acting positive or enthusiastic even when we might not feel like it, leads us to become positive and to look at situations in our life in a positive way. When we act positively and enthusiastically toward situations in our life, negative feelings and thoughts don't have a chance to grow, because our mind is too busy finding the good. Our attitude determines the direction of our lives.
Life is hard. Seeing the positive in difficult situations is hard. Having a positive attitude toward whatever life throws at us is a learned skill, something that we have to practice and nurture in ourselves. Everyday we have a choice to go through our day with a positive or a negative attitude. Choosing to be positive doesn't ensure that things will be easy. We will still be faced with challenges, disappointments and pain, but when we stay positive those situations don't become overwhelming and defeat our goals and relationships. By staying positive we are setting ourselves up for success, because when we feel good we are more motivated to try something new, make healthy decisions in all aspects of our lives, believe in our abilities and talents, and most importantly, when we remain positive in hard situations we show other's how to do the same. Attitudes are contagious, is ours worth catching?
Parents, we are a daily inspiration to the next generation. We have the chance every day to pass on an attitude of joy or a circle of negative. Our little one's learn what they live and we are their first and greatest teacher.
